Melissa and Emily McIntire sisters - The art of creativity |
I always enjoy reading about the creativity and success stories of people. Today's post is dedicated to the two McIntire sisters who managed to auction an Illinois-shaped corn flake off on eBay for $1,350. That's $1,350 for a single corn-flake! Initially, when they listed their item, eBay took it off saying that it violated their policy of banning listing of food items. While many other people would have given up after that objection, the McIntire sisters responded by auctioning off a coupon instead of the cereal directly. The catch? The coupon was redeemable for their Illinois-shaped corn flake. All they had to do then was to hold off their excitement as they watched their listing to completion. "We were biting our nails all the way up to the finish, seeing what would happen," said Melissa McIntire, 23. "There's a lot of relief involved." The coupon was redeemed by a Texan named Monty Kerr who owns the "TriviaMania" web site. Am sure by purchasing the coupon, he must have generated lot of visitors to his Web site. "We're starting a collection of pop culture and Americana items," said Monty Kerr of Austin, Texas. "We thought this was a fantastic one." While the media is currently inundating everyone with the news and fear about recession, people like te McIntires show that smart, creative people will always be able to make money - recession or no recession.

The "V" day |
The much anticipated, and the largest-ever US IPO of Visa Inc will finally be happening this week. The expected listing date is Mar 19 under the ticker symbol "V". Lots of people have been waiting for this IPO because of prior success of MasterCard Inc which had its IPO around $39 but is currently trading around $200 a share. However, others feel that Visa's stock won't grow as fast as Mastercard's."There are people who think it is going to in short order match MasterCard's price," said Gaskins. "But I don't think that is logical."
He sees Visa growing at a less dramatic clip given its much-larger size, which is likely to be expressed in Visa tracking a steady, but less dramatic stock rise. As Visa is owned by banks like Bank of America, Citigroup etc, these bankers collectively are expected to get around $10.2 billion from the IPO.

Making taxes more rewarding |
With the April 15 deadline for filing taxes around the corner, the Fool.com article talks about potentially making the chore of filing taxes more rewarding. How? By charging your tax payments to a cash rewards credit card. However, as the tax payments with the credit cards are processed through third-party service providers who usually tack on additional fee of over 2%, you need to ensure that the cash rewards you get from your credit card exceed that additional fee. Earning 5% can get you $250 on a $5,000 tax bill. But be careful -- there's a catch. When we pay our taxes with plastic, we do so through third-party service providers, and they typically charge a 2.49% fee. That's not chicken feed. If you owe $5,000, for example, you'll fork over an extra $125 -- just for the privilege of not writing a check. Is that really worth it?
If you make $250 via your credit card cash-back program and pay the $125, you'll still come out ahead. But if your cash back is just 1%, giving you $50, you'll end up in the red. Better to opt for a dollar or so in postage. For complete article, see:

Day light saving - energy savings or just hocus-pocus? |
Most of the US switched to day light savings time yesterday, one month ahead of the usual April switch. Reason? Supposedly, the switch allows us to save energy. However, the Wall Street Journal article cites a study which says that daylight saving waste energy. They conclude that the reduced cost of lighting in afternoons during daylight-saving time is more than offset by the higher air-conditioning costs on hot afternoons and increased heating costs on cool mornings. As per another report, switching to the day light savings ahead by almost one month in the US while the rest of world is still on a different time schedule will cause international airlines several million dollars in order to it to manage their schedules.
I personally don't have feelings either way towards the back and forth switching of times in March and November. However, I don't like changing times in the numerous clocks and watches, from microwaves, to wall clock to clock in the car etc. Worst, I feel that this switching is simply fooling around with nature rather than finding a reliable, long term solution to the energy problems. But than that's what the government is good at - fooling around the problem rather than finding reliable and concrete ways to solve the myriads of problems that we are currently facing.
