With the current year about to end soon, many taxpayers will soon be looking for qualified professionals to help them out with the onerous task of filing taxes. While CPAs are among the first professionals who come to mind, there are actually many options available for taxpayers who need outside help for filing their taxes. Alternatives include: using firms like Liberty Tax, H&R Block, and so forth. Another alternative - use Enrolled Agents.

While Enrolled Agents typically cost a lot less than the CPAs, they are not necessarily less competent than the CPAs when it comes to taxes. How to play .avi files in Windows Media Player?

Recently, I tried to play a .avi file created using Camtasia in Windows Media Player (WMP). However, the WMP returned the adjacent error, stating that it could not play the file because it did not support the attached file or a required codec was missing. Fortunately for me, the fix was simple - all I had to do was to download the video codec for .avi file and once I installed it, I was able to play the .avi file in WMP.

DHL's phone number

Recently, received a voicemail from DHL letting us know that they have made several attempts to deliver a package to our house but every time, no one was there. As the package required our signature, they wanted me to call them to discuss the delivery of it. In the voicemail, they left phone number of 800-225-5345 which is also the number listed on their Web site. However, when I called the number, every time I got the message that the number has been disconnected. Finally, I called their number is a different country and found out that in the US, I could reach their customer service at the following number: 480-636-2571. Sure enough, when I called the number, it worked and I was able to schedule a delivery time.

Hopefully, DHL will restore the issue with their 800-225-5345 number; if not, try calling 480-636-2571 if you need to talk to their customer service representative.

Investing in Penny Stocks

One of the questions that frequently comes up in stock investing is "What's a penny stock"? The term "penny" seems to suggest that the stock sells for a penny. However, in the US, the price of such stocks need not be a penny but generally penny stocks tend to have a stock price of under $1. However, there's no standard definition with respect to the stock price and some people even consider stocks trading under $5 as penny stocks. Regardless of the price, the key thing about a penny stock is that the term generally refers to a stock that is highly speculative and risky since such stocks typically are thinly traded and have low liquidity. Penny stocks also typically do not trade on the major stock exchanges such as NASDAQ or NYSE. Rather they trade in the over the counter market through pink sheets and OTC Bulletin Board (OTCBB).

Many novice investors get attracted to penny stocks thinking that they can make huge payoff by investing just a small sum. It's true that due to their very low stock price, you can get a lot of penny stock shares for a small investment. However, the fact that they will yield high payoff may not be true. As mentioned, penny stocks are highly speculative and since they are thinly traded, rumors about such companies can greatly impact their stock prices, making them a very risky investment.

Other things to keep in mind related to the investment in penny stocks include:

1. Penny stocks are typically stocks of very small companies that may not have sufficient cash and other resources to tide over changes in business conditions. As a result, such companies can have a high probability of going under.

2. Since these stocks are typically not traded on major stock exchanges, they may not be subject to same stringent listing, regulatory, and disclosure requirements as the companies that trade on major stock exchanges. In addition, not sufficient information may be available related to the financials of such companies.

3. Due to thin trading, the bid-ask spread of such stocks can be large. As a result, not only you end up paying a high price when buying, you end up doing the same when selling.

4. Due to their low trading volumes, prices of penny stocks can be relatively easily manipulated by unscrupulous people who may buy/sell large number of shares and spread rumors about such stocks with the aim of solely influencing the stock price.

5. While you can get many shares of such firms for a very small investment, a series of such losses over time can add up and result in big losses.

Apart from the above considerations, penny stock investors need to be aware that since these stocks are thinly traded, most research analysts typically do not follow such firms. As a result, there is typically limited research information available about such firms. Sure, there are many resources on the Web that cater to penny stock investors, including penny stock newsletter, groups on major internet portals, and so forth. However, even with such resources, investors need to realize that they are primarily on their own and not rely completely on the recommendations of newsletters, internet groups, and so forth since some people may use such resources to manipulate the prices of penny stocks.

In conclusion, be aware of the above mentioned things when thinking about investing in penny stocks. And if you do thorough research and are not afraid of losing your investment, you may indeed sometimes uncover good opportunities since sometimes, even established firms can temporarily end up trading on pink sheets and OTCBB because they failed to meet the listing requirements of major exchanges.

Review of TurboTax Online

I generally try do my taxes myself. In the years past, I used to it manually by hand but over the last few years, have been doing my taxes using a tax software. Since I got the offer to try out TurboTax online recently, I decided to write this post.

Overall, I found TurboTax to be similar to what most other tax software do - make the tax of filing taxes relatively easier and quicker. First a little bit about the product itself. TurboTax can be installed both locally on your desktop or you can fill out the taxes online at their Web site. If installing locally, you can download the product from their Web site (TurboTax.Intuit.com) or from stores like Best Buy and Amazon.com.

For both the online and desktop products, there are four different versions - Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home and Business, with Basic version being the cheapest. Starting prices for doing federal taxes online with these versions can range from $19.95 for TurboTax Basic to $74.95 for TurboTax Home and Business. However, actual prices for the online versions may be different as TurboTax site determines prices at the time of print or e-file. Prices for the desktop products are typically slightly higher. As with most other tax applications, TurboTax is relatively easy to use, and unless your tax situation is complex or you don't want to do your taxes yourself, you may be able to do away with your CPA in many cases. The application walks you through various data entry screens where you can enter the necessary information. The site interface is very nice and easy to navigate. There are various tabs with intuitive names such as Home, Personal Information, Federal Taxes, State Taxes, Wrap-Up, and Print & File. In addition, there is also a Flags tab that enables you to bookmark a screen for future visit. I also liked the very visible links for TurboTax Help Center and LiveCommunity. These links can come in handy if you need some help. Using the Ask a Tax Expert link, you can also ask specific questions but there's a charge of $29.95 for first 20 minutes.

Overall, I found TurboTax online to be very good and the site does its best to make the task of completing and filing taxes as much easy as possible. The site also makes it easy to try it out for free.

How to find out the size and energy usage of a fridge or freezer?

I was trying to find out the cubic feet (cu. ft) size of my refrigerator but couldn't find it out in the owner's manual or the fridge itself. Fortunately, did a search on the internet and found out about a site that provided the info I was looking for. I just had to enter the fridge brand and model number and the site spit out the size of my fridge. Am sure others may find themselves in similar situation, so decided to write a post on it; the site URL is:

Delta Airlines' frequent flier miles new non-expiration policy

Received a great news from Delta Airlines yesterday - they have eliminated their expiration policy on frequent flyer miles! I don't travel often and had to look for ways to keep my account active. But now with this policy, have to no longer worry about generating activity in my account. Hopefully, other major airlines will also follow suit and get rid of their mileage expiration policy.

Removing inaccurate information from your credit report

I was recently going through my credit report and noticed listing about credit cards that I had closed a while back as well as contact info that was no longer accurate. Fortunately, having dealt with such issues before, I know that I can get any inaccurate info on my credit report removed by contacting the appropriate credit bureaus on my own. It takes time and effort but it's do-able. However, not everyone has the time or liking to do this task on their own. One alternative in such situations is to use firms such as Dsi Solutions and The Credit People that provide credit repair service.

While I haven't used such firms myself and don't mind doing the work myself, such credit repair firms can be of help if someone has inaccurate information on his credit report but needs some assistance to get incorrect information removed from his credit report. These firms can work with you in such situations by reviewing your credit report for any inaccuracies and then contacting appropriate parties to get the incorrect information removed. However, you should realize that these firms can charge fees for their effort. In addition, there are many firms that advertise that they can repair your bad credit. However, you need to be aware that there's no guarantee that using their services will help you repair your bad credit since any information such as late or missed credit card payments and so forth, while negative, may not be removed if the information indeed is true. Therefore, always do some due-diligence before using any outside firm to repair your credit.

Regardless of whether you use third party firms or contact the credit bureaus on your own to get incorrect information removed, such efforts may result in getting rid of inaccurate information from your report which in turn may result in improving your credit score. As many people know, having a good credit score can be a boon when seeking loans, mortgages, or applying for credit cards. In addition, some auto or home insurance companies may also base their decisions regarding premiums on credit scores. So it's wise to ensure that information on your credit reports is correct and up to date to avoid any surprises when applying for any loans.

Due to the housing downturn spanning past several years, many homeowners these days are finding themselves upside down on their property, meaning they owe more on their mortgage than their house is worth. While some of these homeowners have decided to simply walk away from such properties, many other homeowners are trying to unload such properties via a short sale.

A short sale in real estate is when the mortgage lender agrees to accept less than the total amount of mortgage due on the property. For example, the mortgage on the property may be $300,000 but in a short sale, the lender could agree to accept less than $300,000. For the property holder, the advantage of a short sale is that by selling the property, he can free himself from the burden of mortgage. For buyers, the advantage is that they may get a property at a bargain price. In fact, because of this advantage, in many areas of the US, even first time home buyers are trying to buy houses on short sale.

If a short sale is such a win-win for both sellers and buyers, why don't all buyers and sellers go for a short sale? It's because of many reasons, including the following:

- Not all lenders approve short sales.

- Not all properties are eligible for short sales.

- A short sale involves a lot of complexity and time. It can take several months and a lot of paperwork to close a house on short sale.

- Since short sale can take a lot of time, mortgage rates can jump from the time the buyer first puts in a offer for a house on short sale. As a result, the advantage of the lower house price may be more than offset by the increase in mortgage rates.

- Since a lender is involved in the transaction, buyers and sellers have less control on when the closing will happen. This can be an issue for some buyers who may need to move within a certain timeframe.

- A short sale can also have tax implications, especially for the seller. While I am not a financial advisor or tax professional, because of tax ramifications, it's important to consult a competent tax professional.

- A short sale can also negatively impact the credit rating of the property seller.

- Not all real estate agents may be experienced in selling properties on short sale, and some of them may not even show such properties to the prospective buyers because of their lack of experience as well as potentially lower commissions on sale of such properties.

These are just some of the reasons that not all people jump in for a house on short sale. Despite these disadvantages, short sales may offer advantages for both the property sellers and buyers, which is why many areas in the country are experiencing increasing number of short sales.

If looking for a property on short sale, apart from your realtor, you can also use internet to find information. For example, you can use real estate sites like Trulia (to go to the site, click here. On the home page, enter your criteria to do the search, and then on the left hand side of result page, you can do a keyword search on "short sale" to find properties that are on short sale).

Other sites such as Zillow.com and RMLS.com (to go to the site, click here) may also have such information.

Book Review - Full of Book

Since I like learning about stock investing, I was very excited to go through Full of Bull: Do What Wall Street Does, Not What It Says, To Make Money in the Market in the hopes of learning more about investing. However, after reading the book, I felt that except for a couple of chapters, the book was a bit of a disappointment. Reason? The central idea of the book is that ordinary, individual (retail) investors should be careful about the analyst buy/sell recommendations and not take the Wall Street literally. Despite being a relatively thin book (with 196 pages devoted to the main content), the author keeps repeating this theme throughout the book without going too much into how individual investors can better analyze the stocks.

About the Author

The book is written by a highly experienced and well-known analyst, Stephen T. McClellan. He's a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and has over 30 years of investment analyst experience at various firms, including Salomon Brothers and Merrill Lynch (which is now part of Bank of America). He also ranked on the annual Institutional Investor All-America Research Team for 19 consecutive times. Full of Bull is actually Stephen McClellan's second book, the previous one being The Coming Computer Industry Shakeout. Needless to say, the author has an impressive background and credentials, and his achievements are all the more remarkable considering that the author grew up delivering newspapers while in high school.

About the Book

The first edition (hardcover) of Full of Bull was published in late 2007, with some revisions made for the second printing which was released in early 2008. The latest 2009 paperback edition (which is being reviewed here) was printed in June 2009. It has extensive updates and includes a new chapter on bear market investing (Chapter 4). In all, the paperback edition has the following 8 chapters:

Chapter 1 - Decoding Wall Street's Well-Kept Secrets
Chapter 2 - Understanding Wall Street's Misleading Practices
Chapter 3 - Strategies in Quest of the Ideal Investment
Chapter 4 - Investment Strategies to Survive in a Bear Market
Chapter 5 - Evaluating Companies as Investment Candidates
Chapter 6 - Executive Traits Are a Revealing Investment Gauge
Chapter 7 - How Street Analysts Really Operate
Chapter 8 - Reforming Research to Level the Playing Field

The main point discussed throughout the book is that individual investors should be careful and not trust the Wall Street research. Individual retail investors are an after-thought for research analysts, brokers, and corporate executives who are all primarily interested in professional institutional investors such as pension funds, mutual funds, and hedge funds. According to the author, stock picking is not the analyst's job, and individual investors should not blindly trust the buy/sell recommendations of the analysts as these recommendations are unreliable and often late. As per the author, while the analysts may be good at providing thorough, informative company and research information, their buy/sell rating record is mediocre. Much of the book is devoted to the discussion of these points, and at times, feels repetitive.

What I like about the book?

If you want to know how Wall Streets and analysts operate, this book is it. The book claims to be geared towards individual investors. However, it is better suited for research analysts, and discusses topics like research conflicts, analyst conferences, reading corporate executives' body language, and so forth. For example, Chapter 6 - Executive Traits Are a Revealing Investment Gauge, discusses at length the various types and traits of corporate executives so that you know whether they are being truthful or just hyping the prospects of their companies. However, this chapter is better suited for research analysts since they are the ones who come in direct contact with the corporate executives. Most individual investors will only have indirect and occasional contact with the corporate executives via conference calls, and interviews in media.

That said, most individual investors will like going through chapters 3 and 5 which are the best part of this book. These two chapters focus on important rules about investing. The list of strategies/rules is fairly comprehensive, very useful and informative, and worth reading. Some of the important points discussed in this chapter are:

- Protect your capital
- Own only few stocks and invest for the long term in dividend-paying stocks of financially strong firms
- Pursue healthy, stable or expanding profit margins
- Avoid IPOs and turn-around plays
- Prefer smaller firms over bigger ones
- Avoid firms with weird stock structures or sweetheart management setups
- Look for steady expansion of revenues, not just profits

What I dislike about the book?

As mentioned earlier, except for couple of chapters, this book does not provide much new information for becoming a better investor. The fact that individual investors should not naively buy into the advice of Wall Street feels overly repetitive by the end of the book (as it does also probably in this review).

Final Word

Overall, Full of Bull is an ordinary book from the perspective of experienced individual investors. The book does have a couple of useful chapters which discuss many strategies that are especially useful for novice investors

Free medical care for uninsured and unemployed

For people who are unemployed or uninsured, Walgreens is offering some lifeline by offering free tests and routine treatment for minor ailments through its walk-in clinics. The service is expected to be free till Dec 31, 2009 and patients will still pay for prescriptions.

Walgreens said patients who lose their job and health insurance after March 31 will be able to get free treatment at its in-store Take Care clinics for respiratory problems, allergies, infections and skin conditions, among other ailments. Typically those treatments cost $59 or more for patients with no insurance.

Free services will be offered only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walgreens said it will not offer free checkups, vaccinations or other injections because it is focusing on providing services patients might otherwise get at an urgent-care center or even an emergency room.

Patients must present proof they are unemployed, including a federal or state unemployment determination letter and an unemployment check stub. They will have to sign a form at the clinic saying they have lost their jobs and health benefits. If they find a new job or get new health insurance, they will no longer be eligible for free care.

Spouses and children are also eligible for free services if they don't have insurance of their own.
